Manningham tells how a widow invited the actor Richard Burbage to dinner. Shakespeare, overhearing, went to her house earlier that evening, and had dined and was "at his game" when Burbage appeared at the door and told the maid to say King Richard had arrived. William sent the maid back with the message that William the Conquerer came before King Richard.
