New Globe
Wenceslas Hollar's pencil drawing of the second Globe, made in 1630's
After the first Globe was destroyed by fire in 1599, a second Globe was built. This drawing was made in preparation of an engraving called "A Long View of the City of London" in the 1630's, done from a distance of not more than a quarter-mile with a perspective glass, from the tower of what is now Southwark Cathedral. Of course, with the rise of the Puritans, the Globe was torn down to make room for tenament buildings.
